WHAT CAUSES AUTISM, AND HOW IT CAN BE TREATED?
There have been many arguments about the causes of autism. Many people argue that autism may be caused by vaccines that are given to children at or after birth. Others may also argue that the reason why children are autistic is because the mothers of autistic children do negative things during their pregnancy like, drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, or using illegal drugs and controlled substances. This may not be true, as some mothers that do not do negative things, like those described above may still have children with autism. Other arguments may be that the mother's lack of prenatal care may be linked to autism.
One recent argument is that mothers taking antidepressants may also be linked to their child's autism. These arguments may or may not be true. Some antidepressants that may be linked to autism, include Zoloft, and Prozac. Doctors say About 3% of autism cases may be attributed to antidepressants. There have also been class action lawsuits against the makers of the antidepressants described above, claiming that their diagnosis of autism may have been linked by the drugs.
Another argument is that lead poisoning may be the cause of autism, but has not been thoroughly studied.
There is no definite treatment for autism. However, there are several types of therapy that can help people cope with autism. Many include:
Applied Behavior Analysis or ABA:
A type of therapy in which autistic children's behavior is modified using various types of therapy to help with coping with autism. Such as using cards with pictures, helping them draw, coloring, etc. ABA is usually done with the help of a trained ABA therapist.
Music Therapy:
A type of therapy in which it involves music to help autistic people express their feeling and communicate. Music Therapy may also may help with their anxiety. This may not work with all autistic individuals as some people with autism may be bothered by the sound of the music, due to a sensory problem, which can lead to sensory overloads, and meltdowns, a severe type of tantrum.
Speech Therapy:
A type of therapy which involved teaching an autistic individual with social and speaking difficulties how to speak, and help them with social skills. This could involve things such as, facilitated communication, using cards with words, and board games to help with social skills, as well as using keyboards for non-verbal autistic children in order for the to communicate. Even some autistic people that are non-verbal, can say a few words on their own.
